What should I look out for to reduce the chances of being scammed?

Here are the Top 5 things to look out for:

1. Be aware that scams exist.

The more that we report and raise awareness of scams, the more protected we become, which will help to reduce the number of Australians falling victim to scams.

2. Never click on links from text messages or emails.

Financial institutions will never ask you to click on a link to provide personal or banking information.

3. Scammers will attempt to gain your trust.

This can be over weeks, months, or even years. Once the scammer feels they have gained your trust, they will claim they need your help and ask for money to be sent to them urgently.

4. Scammers will impersonate large well-known corporations in phone calls to victims.

If you were not expecting a call, or have any concerns, it may be helpful to find the contact number on the company’s website and call back.

5. Be aware of any unsolicited emails, messages and phone calls claiming to be offering a low risk, high reward investment opportunity.

Remember, if it sounds and looks too good to be true, it probably is.
